The Tuberculosis Research Laboratory was established at The University of Queensland in 2012 and is now uniquely positioned in the country as having a sole focus on the microbial pathogensis of TB. The laboratory consists of dedicated PC2 and PC3 containment facilities, and has an established reputation for research excellence.
The role: The successful appointee will contribute to research under the supervision of group head, Dr Nick West, towards understanding the mechanisms of resistance observed towards leading experimental anti-TB compounds within the clinical pipeline. Strategies to both avoid and overcome resistance will be established. Work will include modern techniques of molecular microbiology, including construction of bacterial genetic knockouts and recombinant strains, drug susceptibility assessment, mammalian cell culture and infection. Work will be conducted within a PC2 and PC3 environments. This role offers the opportunity to address individually-developed and collaboratively-generated research questions, and to supervise honours, masters and doctoral students. The successful appointee will be supported in their career development and encouraged to apply for their own future research support if possible.
The person: Applicants should possess a PhD in Molecular Microbiology. Experience with Mycobacterium tuberculosis would be a strong advantage. You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in infectious disease research, possess strong general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent analytic skills, excellent writing abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams. Specialist training will be available.

Remuneration: This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment at Academic Level A. The remuneration package will be in the range AUD$64,533 – $81,545 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range AUD$75,504 – $95,408 p.a.).
