Description:  Post-doctoral positions are available to perform cutting edge research in the emerging field of optical molecular imaging at the University of Michigan.  Successful applicants will join a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary research team to develop innovative imaging technologies and methods for clinical translation.  Projects focus on the development, characterization, and validation of peptides as specific molecular probes for early detection and image-guided therapy of cancer in the digestive tract.  High resolution imaging systems will be used to study small animal models of human disease, including confocal endomicroscopy, multi-photon endomicroscopy, fluorescence endoscopy, and photoacoustic tomography.  Goal is to perform real-time detection of pre-malignant mucosa (dysplasia) in setting of Barrett's esophagus, biliary tract, pancreatic duct, ulcerative colitis and/or flat colonic lesions.  Clinical studies will be performed to validate peptide performance in vivo will be performed in collaboration with academic physicians in the University of Michigan Medical Center.  Experience with any one of these areas, including peptide biochemistry, molecular biology laboratory techniques, including cloning, recombinant protein expression, cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA, PCR, RT-PCR, primer, probe design, plasmid preparation, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence is desirable.  Experience with handling of small animals, including mice and rats, is desirable.  Salary is commensurate with training and experience.  The University of Michigan is committed to diversity and equality in education and employment.

Environment:  The Research Centers for the Bioengineering Research Partnership (BRP) and the Barrett’s Esophagus Translational Research Network (BETRNet) are located in the Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB) at the University of Michigan.  Research is performed in the Center for Molecular Imaging (CMI) (www.med.umich.edu/msair), a state-of-the-art small animal imaging facility that houses instruments for performing real time imaging, including Olympus FV1000MPE twin multi-photon microscope with Spectra-Physics Deep See femtosecond lasers, Endra Nexus 128 photoacoustic tomography scanner, Edgewave diode pumped Q-switched Nd-YAG laser, Opotek Phocus laser with optical parametric oscillator (OPO), IVIS Spectrum, 200, and 100 (Caliper) systems, Siemens Inveon PET/CT, GE Healthcare integrated eXplore speCZT/CT 120, and two Varian horizontal bore MRI systems (9.4, 7, and 3T).
