The Department of Medicine, Huddinge conducts preclinical and clinical research in a variety of areas and undergraduate and graduate education. The department is internationally oriented and consists of seven units with about 40 teams.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Applicants are invited to submit applications for a two year postdoctoral research position with possibility of a 1-2 year extension.

The Jacobsen (http://ki.se/en/medh/sten-eirik-w-jacobsen-group) and Woll (http://ki.se/en/medh/petter-woll-group) groups' research focus is on cellular and molecular pathways governing the earliest fate decisions in normal hematopoiesis (Luc et al, Nat Immuol, 2012; Böiers et al, Cell Stem Cell, 2013; Sanjuan-Pla et al, Nature, 2013) and how these are dysregulated in hematologic malignancies (Tehranchi et al, New Engl J Med, 2010; Mead et al, Cell Rep, 2013; Woll et al, Cancer Cell, 2014). This is studied in mouse models, as well as in relevant patients. Key technologies applied towards these research questions include flow cytometry, mouse genetics, high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing including single cell analysis, and various in vitro and in vivo stem cell assays.

Part of the research will be performed at the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM; http://ki.se/en/medh/herm), a newly formed center at the Karolinska Institute aspiring to create a strong translational research environment bringing together basic and clinical scientists focusing on normal and malignant hematopoiesis. Research focusing on basic questions in stem cell and developmental biology will largely be conducted at the CMB(http://ki.se/en/cmb/startpage), the home of DBRM (Center in Developmental Biology for Regenerative Medicine), a world-leading research center in developmental and stem cell biology (http:// www.dbrm.se). The Jacobsen and Woll laboratories aim to integrate translational and basic research at HERM and CMB.

Job Description
The projects will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Sten Eirik Jacobsen or Assistant Prof. Petter Woll. Both scientists were recently recruited from the University of Oxford (http://www.imm.ox. ac.uk/sten-eirik-jacobsen-2) to establish independent research programs at the Karolinska Institutet. Projects in Professor Jacobsen's group, located at HERM and CMB, will focus on unraveling the normal cellular and molecular pathways governing lineage commitment from hematopoietic stem cells to lineage-restricted progenitors, during embryonic development as well as in adult hematopoiesis, and establish their involvement in leukemic transformation. A major focus in Dr. Woll's group, located at HERM, will be to establish the role of alternative splicing in normal hematopoiesis and how this is dysregulated in hematologic malignancies. All projects will largely utilize mouse models of normal and malignant hematopoiesis but also have access to relevant patient material.

The applicants are expected to take the lead on a high profile research projct through active pursuit of relevant experiments, and through regular interactions with the group leaders and important collaborators within and outside the research institutes
