he Systems Biology department, located in Livermore, California, conducts basic and applied experimental and computational research in the fields of Biodefense, Emerging Infectious Disease, and Bioenergy. The department consists of a multidisciplinary team of approximately 20 staff, postdocs and technologists with expertise in bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology, phycology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry. Specific areas of focus include the identification and characterization of known and novel pathogens, including products of genetic engineering, and their associated pathogenicity genes; the development of new methods for sustainable algal biofuel production; and the identification of molecular determinants of protein binding specificity. Key sponsors include the DOE Office of Science, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institutes of Health, and the Sandia LDRD Program.
