A postdoctoral research position is available in the Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute (PSHVI), Penn State College of Medicine in the area of autonomic and cardiovascular physiology. The laboratory is focused on understanding the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the control of cardiovascular function during exercise in health and disease, including heart failure, hypertension, and muscular dystrophy. The goal of major ongoing projects is to define the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle blood flow with a current emphasis on nitric oxide signaling. Sophisticated in vivo rat and mouse models are used to perform highly integrative, mechanistic studies that form the basis for future translational studies in humans.
The ideal candidate will have a MD, PhD, or DVM degree at the time of appointment. A strong background in autonomic, cardiovascular, or exercise physiology is required. Prior experience performing hemodynamic studies in rodents is highly desired. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in all aspects of the research project, including experimental design, data collection, data analysis, preparation of graphs and figures, and preparation of manuscripts. Strong writing and oral communication skills are highly desired. Ample opportunity exists for collaboration with other investigators in the PSHVI engaging in pre-clinical and clinical cardiovascular research. Highly motivated candidates should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names of at least 3 references to Gail D. Thomas, Ph.D. (gthomas4@hmc.psu.edu). Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce. Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
