Job Description:
The University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Department of Microbial Pathogenesis is seeking a post-doctoral candidate interested in matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) and disease mechanisms of action. This position is supported in part via a NIH consortium (Medical Countermeasures Against Radiological and Nuclear Threats - MCART) involving multiple PIs across several schools within the University of Maryland and across several independent research outfits. The primary goal of the consortium is development of medical countermeasures against radiological threat. Additional research goals include understanding the molecular basis of tissue response to a variety of stressors, including radiological and microbial insults.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant’s primary responsibility will involve MALDI-MSI of tissues for biomarker discovery and characterization. In addition, the successful applicant will be required to integrate this data into a variety of bioinformatics platforms. Candidates may also have the opportunity to become involved in research in microbial pathogenesis.
Qualifications:
The credentials expected for this position include a strong understanding of mass spectrometry techniques, experience with basic histology and histological techniques, a firm knowledge of general analytical approaches, and extensive experience in microbiology and pathogenesis. Desirable characteristics include a strong, peer-reviewed publication record of multidisciplinary research, excellent oral and written communication skills, experience working within multi-PI projects, and a highly cooperative, collaborative demeanor. Applicants must hold a PhD in biological, biochemical, or biomedical science. A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate self-motivation, impeccable planning skills, independent project development, and history of fruitful research.
